Pet Post -- Tricks & Costumes

Last year's winner, the infamous crosstown G train, apparently sealed the prize by moving very slowly when called, or hardly at all. What a clever pup! Who will grab the prize this year?! Come on out to District Dog's Halloween Parade tomorrow and see... (and don't worry, if you can't make it, I promise lots of re-caps!)

Dreams -- Many Moods

I had a dream about this movie last night, and for some reason, these two stills from Stranger than Fiction encapsulate my moods today.

I'm feeling sentimental:

(from when Will Ferrell's character brings a gift to his romantic interest, a cute & creative baker. He's all, "I brought you flours")

And wildly overwhelmed:

(from when the character thinks he's lost his mind...)

Sweet & Crazed,
Xo Liza

Liz Tran -- AOD

"Turning Around," 2009.
Acrylic Ink, Acrylic Paint and Graphite on Panel

"Arch," 2009.
Acrylic Ink, Acrylic Paint and Graphite on Panel

These delightfully colored images remind me of the bending, circular branches on the tree of life (which I have tattooed on my back!). Tran's mixed media pieces hold within them a playful sincerity that sucks me right in. "[The trees] seem to give us permission to risk taking a neon path to joy." -Molly Norris

OLJ Press!

Thanks to all for coming out to our Bookmill show -- it was such a blast. And although I've never read a piece of press with more quotation marks in it, we were still tickled to make it in the paper!

Chris Jordan -- AOD

"Gyre," 2009
8x11 feet, in three vertical panels

"Gyre" (detail)

This piece depicts 2.4 million pieces of plastic, equal to the estimated number of pounds of plastic pollution that enter the world's oceans every hour. All of the plastic in this image was collected from the Pacific Ocean.

From the artist: "Perhaps these uncomfortable feelings can become part of what connects us, serving as fuel for courageous individual and collective action as citizens of a new kind of global community. This hope continues to motivate my work."

Image Inspiration -- Miro & the Dancer

Joan Miro with the dancer "La Chunga" in Barcelona, 1953
I love this shot. I can practically feel her dress moving across the floor!

I also feel compelled to include one of my favorite Miro lithographs (mainly because of its nod to Jasper Johns' letter blocks):

"SOCAR Oil Fields #3, Baku, Azerbaijan, 2006," Chromogenic color print.

"Oil Fields #22, Cold Lake Production Project, Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada," 2001.

Today's artist somehow captures the intrusion of oil in our natural landscape and creates visually pleasing (and equally disturbing) images. Check out his current show at the Corcoran and more on his artist's website here.

Man Ray, not known for his work in tapestries, produced this piece that might be one of my favorite works by the artist-- for its alluring texture and purposeful unfinished nature.
